Blogspot bloggers are under the mistaken impression that they can delete a blog to make the address available to others. Nothing could be far from the truth. Blogger has recently introduced this mechanism to prevent spammers from taking over deleted blog addresses.
To delete a blog one has to login at Blogger.com and click Settings link for the blog on the Dashboard. On the Basic subtab of Settings tab scroll down at the very end to see the Delete button. You will be asked to confirm your Delete order on clicking the button. Confirming will consign your blog address to your account and you can reclaim it anytime you want. You may not get the content which was originally in it! For reclaiming the content look in Google Cache.
To reclaim your blog address login at Blogger.com and click Create a Blog link on Dashboard. Type in same URL and follow the arrows to reclaim the address. Only you can reclaim the address and that too only by login through the account from which you deleted the blog. Login through another account WILL NOT RECLAIM BLOG ADDRESS.
If you want to claim the blog in another account transfer the blog to that account after reclaiming the deleted blog.
Now if only Blogger could introduce a similar mechanism for blog addresses which are discarded when a blog address is changed! These blog URLs are picked up by spammers for their Page Rank value. One way to avoid this is to immediately claim the old URL after changing blog address to a new URL. Changing the URL of an old blog is not recommended for this reason. Old blogs can be taught new URLs more easily than old dogs can be taught new tricks but you will lose search engine traffic and rank built up over the years. It will take some time before search engines index the new URL.
